Charged With a Crime?
Kevin Colwell — an Albany, New York, Criminal Defense Lawyer
Criminal convictions — even for misdemeanors — can have serious, long-lasting consequences. Apart from the immediate penalties, like fines and jail time, you'll also face the prospect of having a crime on your permanent record.

I'm attorney Kevin Colwell, and I can help. Ten years ago, I began my legal career as a public defender for Columbia County, handling an intensive caseload defending against criminal charges of all sorts. Later, I became a public prosecutor in family court for Columbia County's Department of Social Services. To this day, I still serve part-time as a prosecutor in Hudson City Court.
My experience on both sides of the aisle has given me deep insight into the mentality of prosecutors and judges when handling misdemeanor defense. I know what motivates the prosecutor, and I know how to present a strong case to protect your rights and freedoms. Call me to discuss defense for misdemeanors like:
- Drunk driving charges (including aggravated DWI and felony charges)
- Reckless driving and other traffic violations
- Domestic abuse or violations of an order for protection
- Possession/sale of a Controlled Substance
- Aggravated harassment and assault
- Disorderly conduct
- Petty larceny
Should I Go to Trial or Accept a Plea Bargain?
While most cases are settled before trial, only a lawyer can help you address that question. The answer depends wholly on your particular charges and circumstances. For some of my clients, it's not worth it to take a case to trial when a plea bargain offers a less expensive route to lower charges.
For other clients, it's imperative to fight the charges every step of the way. When a plea bargain isn't enough, you can depend on the extensive trial experience I gained as a public defender.
But I know what your charges are really worth to the prosecution. That means I can strike effective plea bargains. And if there are any procedural errors involved in your arrest, I will fight to get your charges dropped or seriously reduced.
But I can't start building a strategy for your misdemeanor defense until you call me. To schedule your free initial consultation and to find out how I can help, call 518.618.4719 or 866.726.2071 (Toll Free) or just send me an e-mail.
